Matalan Anniversary 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle
2.00 Aintree: The Matalan Anniversary 4yo Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1) (2m1/2f)
The opening race of the three-day Grand National Festival is Anniversary Juvenile Hurdle. It was first run in 1977 and before that was called the Lancashire Hurdle. Originally it was a Grade 2 race but in 2005 it was upgraded to its current status and always attracts the top juvenile hurdlers of the season.
The race is normally a steeping stone for those that have ran in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham and horses such as Zarkandar, Katchit and Detroit City are just some that have completed the double in recent times. Winners of the Anniversary Hurdle often go on and compete in the top races the following season so holds a very important part in the racing calendar and gets the meeting off to a terrific start.
